Be an asset to others

Helping someone selflessly and without any reward can be a great source of life meaning and can contribute to gain pleasant feelings for the helper.

Selfless helping and volunteering can help you feel useful and needed, take your mind off your own worries, and feel generous and grateful for the life you have.

It doesn’t matter if you help people close to you from time to time or regularly under the auspices of a volunteer organization. Choose the form of help that suits you and that you can afford. There is no need to overstretch your own strength and resources, even a little help counts.

Tips

  • At first, think about what your options are and how much time/money you want to spend on a worthwhile activity, and what you would enjoy doing.
  • Start volunteering in an organisation that works in an area that appeals to you (children’s homes, refugee centres, libraries, activities for the elderly…).
  • Volunteer abroad for a longer period of time, for example in the summer through Workaway.
